The Hidden Cost of the Open Road: Reflections on How Trucking Lost Its Way

When people picture trucking, they often imagine freedom — the open road, the hum of the tires, and endless possibilities. But for many truckers today, including my husband — a professional driver with nearly 30 years of experience — the reality is far more complicated, and frankly, much harder than it should be.

I’ve watched my husband, one of the hardest working, most dedicated men I know, give his heart and grit to this industry.

Trucking used to offer decent pay and a strong sense of pride. Now? It’s a constant battle — finding parking, dealing with layers of regulations, navigating shrinking compensation, and living with the sacrifice that few outside the industry fully understand.

It isn’t just the long hours. It’s the invisible toll: the missed family moments, the loneliness, the physical strain, and the gnawing feeling that society has forgotten the sheer sacrifice it takes to keep this country moving.

So when I watched Wendover Productions’ latest video, How the Trucking Industry Got So Terrible, it resonated deeply. It captured a truth we know firsthand.

Key Insights from Wendover’s Video:

Here are a few points that stood out, and why they matter so much to the real lives behind the wheel:

  • The Shift from “Good Job” to Burnout: Deregulation, endless competition, and “independent contractor” models have turned a once-respected career into a pressure cooker.
  • Compensation Beyond Mileage: Companies like Walmart at least pay for stops and delays — a small acknowledgment that truckers do much more than drive. But that’s the exception, not the rule.
  • The Great Paradox: Trucking is in high demand, but conditions are often worse than ever.
  • Misclassification is a Big Problem: Many “independent” drivers have almost no real control — they’re independent in name only.
  • Burnout is Everywhere: A 90% turnover rate at major carriers tells you everything you need to know.
  • Automation is Coming: And the question becomes — will it replace poor jobs, or destroy the last good ones too?

In Closing:

For me, for my family, for the truckers who still carry this burden day after day — this isn’t just a conversation about logistics. It’s about human beings. It’s about real families sacrificing so that shelves are stocked and homes are supplied.

It’s easy for celebrities and billionaires to lose touch with the realities ordinary people face every day. It’s easy to glamorize trucking without ever considering the deep personal cost.

But here at CherryCoBiz, we honor the grit it takes to keep America running — and we’ll keep speaking up for it.

P.S. — Speaking of trucking, I recently discovered a YouTube trucker who shares real-life drives and behind-the-scenes moments from the road. He’ll be making an appearance in an upcoming “YouTube Fab Five” post here on CherryCoBiz — stay tuned! ??
