You Live

A stylized graphic of U.S. Representative Mike Johnson wearing glasses, depicted with a large polka-dot clown bow tie. He is surrounded by small clown icons on a background of the U.S. flag. Large yellow text at the top reads: “When you say you’re ‘for the people’ but cut Medicaid for your own constituents.” The overall design satirically criticizes Mike Johnson for proposing Medicaid cuts despite claiming to serve the public.

Republicans, Medicaid, and the Myth of “Family Values”: My Reflections on Brian Tyler Cohen’s Video

I recently watched a video by Brian Tyler Cohen entitled:
“WHOA: Republicans CAUGHT screwing over their own voters.”

In the video, Cohen highlights how certain Republican lawmakers are pushing for cuts to Medicaid and possibly other earned benefit programs (like Medicare and Social Security) that their own constituents rely on. This is especially troubling since it targets some of the most vulnerable Americans—including low-income families and children—who lack the political or financial power to fight back.

Transcript Highlights

Brian Tyler Cohen:
“Republicans can make it that they intend to go after at least Medicaid if not other earned benefit programs that you’ve spent your entire lives paying into…”

“…among the most vulnerable lawmakers is Gabe Evans from Colorado’s 8th congressional district … more than a quarter of his constituents are on Medicaid…”

“…Democrats are well aware of the vulnerability of these Republicans as they try and re-engage in the same Healthcare debate that cost them 41 seats in the House in 2018.”

“You don’t engage in Medicaid cuts if you care about working-class Americans… The GOP knows that they want to cut Healthcare but they want to do so with minimal political consequences…”

(For the full transcript or more context, please check out Cohen’s video embedded below.)

Who Are These “Family Values” For?

We often hear Republicans touting themselves as the party of “family values.” But when those supposed values lead to stripping away healthcare services for families, seniors, and children—arguably the very people most in need—it becomes painfully clear that their priorities lie elsewhere.

Cutting Medicaid—something Americans have spent their whole lives paying into—reveals a willingness to undermine essential services that keep communities healthy and stable. It begs the question: Whose family is actually being “valued” here?

Trump and Musk: Exploitation Over Leadership

Donald Trump has tried to paint himself as a champion for the working class, but his actions say otherwise. He never had the “mandate” he claims, and he’s shown time and again that he’s more concerned with pleasing those he considers powerful or influential—billionaires who, ironically, might not actually care about him in return.

Then there’s Elon Musk, often hailed as a “visionary” tech mogul. The sad reality is that he’s used his vast resources and platform in ways that appear to benefit primarily the ultra-wealthy (including himself), while undermining regulations designed for public safety and well-being.

Let’s be honest: Targeting the most vulnerable because they seem like “easy prey” is not leadership—it’s exploitation.

Personal Frustrations

I’m personally outraged at the direction our country has taken:

  • Trump’s So-Called “Billionaire Friends”: Trump’s alliances with ultra-rich individuals seem more rooted in his desire for their approval than in any genuine attempt to help the American people.
  • Musk’s Role: If Elon Musk can’t respect how our system works or the institutions we’ve built over 250+ years for the public good, maybe he should reconsider his place here.
  • Who Pays the Price: Many Americans who never voted for Trump are forced to endure the consequences of his policies—just like many of his own supporters who might not have realized what they were signing up for.

Why This Matters

  1. Healthcare Is a Right
Slashing Medicaid or any other vital program doesn’t just affect “someone else.” It affects all of us, directly or indirectly.
  2. Real “Family Values” Mean Inclusivity
True family values mean supporting parents, children, seniors, and low-income communities—not funneling money to billionaires at the expense of everyone else.
  3. Our Democracy Is at Stake
Democracy thrives when government officials represent all their constituents, not just a wealthy few. When elected leaders ignore the needs of the many, our national fabric tears apart.

A Call to Action

  • Contact Your Representative
Dial (202) 224-3121 to reach the Capitol switchboard. Let them know how you feel about Medicaid cuts—or any legislation that harms the most vulnerable. They do log these calls, and your voice matters.
  • Stay Informed
    • Watch Brian Tyler Cohen’s videos or other reputable news sources for updates.
    • Follow local organizations and advocacy groups.
    • Read up on policy changes—especially those that quietly chip away at health and social services.
  • Speak Up and Vote
Encourage family, friends, and neighbors to stay politically active, vote in every election, and hold leaders accountable.

Final Thoughts

I’m deeply saddened for our country, my children, and future generations. America was once admired around the globe, but now our reputation feels tarnished. Leaders like Trump and enablers like Elon Musk appear more interested in self-serving agendas than in genuinely improving people’s lives. Wealth, as we can see, doesn’t buy moral fortitude—it can enable arrogance and cruelty if left unchecked.

While all this is infuriating, we still have power: the power to speak out, organize, and vote. I’ve chosen to write this blog post to use my voice and platform to inform, agitate, and inspire. You can do the same, in your own way. Let’s ensure those in power know we’re paying attention—and that we will hold them accountable.
