Remembering Mighty Mydas: A Tribute to Our Beloved Kung Foo Kitty

Passed away on January 20, 2025

Yesterday we said our final goodbye to Mighty Mydas, our golden child and Siamese king of the roost. Though the house feels emptier without his signature meows and mischievous antics, his spirit remains woven into every corner of our lives. I want to share some memories of Mydas, celebrate his unique personality, and remember how he filled our days with both challenges and immeasurable joy.

A Cat with Character

Mydas was never a quiet house guest. He had a knack for knocking objects off dressers one by one—an annoying yet endearing quirk that earned him a special place in our hearts. His vocalizations were legendary; you could always tell who the real boss was just by listening to his assertive claims of territory. He might have driven me nuts with his fast paws and constant presence, but deep down, I adored him.

We lovingly nicknamed him “Kung Foo Kitty” for his lightning speed and strategic paw plays. I still laugh when I remember how he played paw tag under the door—swift enough to outmaneuver any challenger. Mydas was a master of playful combat, and his speed was unmatched. Even on days when I was frustrated by his antics, his charm and gentle side won me over time and again.

A Bittersweet Relationship

I’ll be honest: I never saw myself as a cat person. Before Mydas came into my life, cats and I had a rocky history. I’d joke about how he was the ultimate troublemaker when he messed with me over a hamburger and fries, or how he boldly took a bite from my burger just to test boundaries. Those little moments of defiance paired with affection taught me that love can be unexpected and sometimes comes wrapped in chaos.

Despite his eccentricities, Mydas had zero thresholds for loving. He demanded affection on his terms, but he also knew how to offer gentle, tender moments that spoke volumes. When I played with him, tapping on his paw to initiate games, his gentle yet mischievous nature shone through—reminding me why I fell in love with him despite his quirks.

The Last Days

As the years passed, Mydas began to slow down. Over the past year, it was heartbreaking to see his health decline. Christmas was particularly tough as he hid more often, and his appetite dwindled. We tried everything, even giving him gravy to make eating easier, clinging to every extra moment together.

The weekend before his passing was the hardest. Watching him barely walk, stumbling, and meowing in distress was almost unbearable. Yet, even in his suffering, he sought closeness, curling up near me as if silently asking for comfort. I massaged his neck, gently pet him—doing everything I could to offer love in his final days. Letting him go was one of the hardest decisions we ever made, but it was the kindest, most humane choice given his suffering.

Celebrating a Legacy of Love

Mydas may have been a pain in the butt at times (I still chuckle thinking about his persistent dresser assaults), but his spirit, speed, and affectionate demeanor left a lasting imprint on our hearts. I’m not sure who will take his exact place—perhaps Indi, with his newfound boss-like aspirations, might fill some of those paw prints—but nothing can replace the unique bond we shared with Mydas.

In sharing this, I hope to honor his memory and offer a space for others to remember their own beloved pets. Losing a fur baby is never easy, but celebrating the love and laughter they brought into our lives can ease the pain a little.

Mydas, our Kung Foo Kitty, taught me that love isn’t always neat or predictable—it’s wild, fast, sometimes a bit obnoxious, but always full of heart. I will miss his sharp claws, his quick paws, and most of all, the love he gave so freely. ???

Feel free to share your own memories of your pets in the comments. Remembering them together makes the loss a little lighter and keeps their spirit alive.
