Why Do Good Truckers Keep Leaving? It’s Pay, Benefits, and Respect

Hello V-Trucker community! I’m Terra Turner, and today I want to have an honest conversation about a critical issue in our industry. My husband, a dedicated trucker for 27 years, and countless others face ongoing challenges that impact not just their wallets but their willingness to stay in this demanding line of work. It’s time to delve into why so many good drivers are driven away.

Section 1: The High Cost of Trucking (Not Just in Miles) The trucking industry is notorious for its high turnover rates, and here’s why:

  • Long Hours & Time Away: Days or even weeks on the road can lead to serious burnout.
  • Demanding Work: The physical and mental toll of traffic, deadlines, and loading/unloading is immense.
  • Pay & Benefits: Often, the paychecks do not reflect the grueling hours put in, and the benefits fall short of compensating for the sacrifices made.
  • Poor Treatment: Many drivers feel undervalued and disrespected by their employers, which diminishes company loyalty.
  • Competition: With a persistent driver shortage, some are tempted by the grass on the other side, hoping for better conditions or pay.

Section 2: My Husband’s Benefits Struggle Currently, my husband is with a company that demands extensive hours on the road. Initially, the pay seemed adequate—until the insurance bills arrived. Sometimes, half his paycheck goes towards insurance, leaving us questioning the value of his hard work. This isn’t an isolated issue; it’s a widespread problem that many in our community face.

Your Turn! I urge you to share your experiences. Have high costs and low benefits pushed you or someone you know to reconsider this career? Let’s start a dialogue about what needs to change and how we can collectively push for better conditions.

Positive Outlook: Despite these challenges, I remain hopeful. Our new V-Trucker platform isn’t just about sharing problems—it’s about finding solutions. Together, we’ll explore ways to navigate this tough industry, advocate for improvements, and support each other. We believe that good truckers deserve better, and it’s time those in charge listened. Through V-Trucker, we aim to create a strong community that not only addresses the issues but actively works towards better conditions for all. Let’s transform our challenges into opportunities and ensure that every trucker can drive with dignity and pride. After all, they keep our country moving forward.
