There are people in life who leave an imprint so profound that even years later, their presence feels just as strong as ever. For me, that person is my Little Grandma Rose. Though she passed away in 2005, her memory remains a source of comfort, guidance, and love. She was more than a grandmother—she was a pillar in my life, and I miss her every day.
I wasn’t a popular child and didn’t have many friends. But my Grandma Rose made sure I never felt alone. She would sit across from me at the kitchen table, her eyes full of love, and tell me how beautiful I was. “You were the most beautiful baby I ever saw,” she’d say, with a warmth that melted any sadness in my heart. She’d pray with me, asking for close friends to come into my life, and her kindness wrapped around me like a blanket. She made me feel seen, valued, and cherished when I needed it most.
Grandma Rose’s life was full of simple pleasures and traditions. Her favorite flower was the carnation—delicate, elegant, and timeless, just like her. She had a few sayings that I still treasure to this day. She’d tell us, “A bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck,” a phrase that always brought a smile to my face. And whenever I’d ask her name, she’d grin and respond, “Puddin tame, and if you ask me again, I’ll tell you the same.” It was her playful spirit and sense of humor that made moments with her feel like pure magic.
While I don’t remember the name of her favorite song, I recall that it was patriotic—a reflection of her strong values and love for her country. I’ll have to ask my mom about the details, but it’s another piece of her that reminds me of her unwavering faith and loyalty.
Grandma Rose taught me many lessons, but the most profound was the art of honesty and integrity. She lived a life full of grace, honesty, and unshakable morals. While my life looks different from hers, I know that I am a good and loving person, and I believe she played a pivotal role in shaping the person I’ve become. Her influence is a guiding light, helping me navigate life with the same kindness and integrity she embodied.
Losing her was one of the hardest things I’ve faced, and even now, memories bring tears. But as I write this, I find solace in knowing that while she may not be physically here, I keep her spirit alive—through conversations, cherished sayings, and the lessons she imparted. She’s a part of me, a part of my story, and her love lives on in my heart.
