Embracing Longevity: The Treasures of Daily Use

Daily writing prompt
What’s the oldest thing you own that you still use daily?

Good afternoon, Friends! Today’s writing prompt on WordPress made me reflect on something quite significant: What’s the oldest thing you own that you still use daily? This got me thinking about not just one item, but a variety of cherished belongings that have stood the test of time in my daily life. In an age where overconsumption is rampant, it’s refreshing to appreciate the things that continue to serve us well, year after year.

Clothing: Timeless Pieces

Let’s start with clothing. While I do have some newer pieces, I pride myself on keeping my clothes for a long time. The oldest garment I still wear is about 15 years old. I remember proudly paying just a dollar for a piece that lasted over a decade—talk about getting your money’s worth! Thriftiness has always been a part of my lifestyle, and it’s a benefit that not everyone experiences.

Purses: Gifts of Durability

When it comes to purses, my Yin has blessed me with beautiful Coach purses that I’ve had for 3 to 4 years. These purses are some of the best-made items I own, and I typically don’t buy new ones anymore. Their durability and timeless design mean I can use them for years to come.

Shoes: Stepping Through Time

Shoes are another category where I value longevity. My oldest pair is probably about 5 years old. I believe in keeping shoes until they are no longer functional, rather than following fleeting fashion trends.

Everyday Essentials: From Hair Ties to Brushes

Some of the smallest items in our daily routines often go unnoticed. I have hair ties that might be as old as 20 years and brushes I’ve held onto for countless years. These little items serve as daily reminders of the importance of quality and care.

Health and Wellness: My Blood Pressure Cuff

Managing high blood pressure has been a long journey, and my blood pressure cuff has been a reliable companion for about 5 years. It’s a daily essential that I depend on to monitor my health.

Sustainable Choices: Blueland Products

I’ve mentioned Blueland in my blogs before, and I’ve been using their products for about a year. I love their forever tins for laundry and dishwasher soap, as well as their glass soap dispensers and cleaning product bottles. These sustainable choices mean I’m reducing plastic waste, doing my part for the planet.

Technology: From Cell Phones to Computers

My cell phone is about 4 years old, and my computer, which just recently gave out, served me well for over 4 years. Both were integral to my daily life, and I appreciate the value they provided. And let’s not forget Alexa, who has been a part of our lives for around 10 years, assisting us in countless ways.

The True Oldest Thing: Knowledge and Social Media

Reflecting on what I use daily for the longest, my husband humorously mentioned himself. But in a broader sense, it’s my knowledge and the use of social media. I’ve been learning and growing every day, and social media has been a part of my life for over 20 years. While not all my posts have been perfect, I now see it as a platform to share knowledge and promote growth.

Conclusion: Valuing What We Have

In a world of overconsumption, it’s essential to appreciate the items that serve us well over the years. From clothing and accessories to daily essentials and technology, each piece holds a story of durability and value. By embracing longevity, we not only save money but also contribute to a more sustainable world.

Let’s continue to cherish and use what we have, sharing our knowledge and experiences along the way. I invite you all to join me in this journey of mindful consumption and lifelong learning.
