Good afternoon, Friends! Today’s WordPress writing prompt asks, “What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever found (and kept)?” And I knew exactly what came to mind—a memory that reminds me how joy, value, and longevity can all come wrapped up in something wonderfully simple.
Almost eighteen years ago, my friend and I were out garage sale hopping on one of those bright, breezy days that make you feel like the world is full of possibility. At one house, I stopped and spotted this gorgeous two-piece set hanging off to the side. I couldn’t quite tell if it was a dress, a nightgown, or some kind of lounge combo—but it was beautiful. Satin-like, soft black with bold flowers splashed across it like art. The dress was roomy and comfortable, and I started wearing it as a nightgown. The matching top—more of an overshirt or robe—became my favorite thing to slip on at home.
The fabric wasn’t exactly high-end, and eventually the dress part gave out after years of love and use. But that top? It held on. I wore it for more than a decade—at home, while writing, while cleaning, while living. It became part of my rhythm, something familiar that always felt like me. I finally let it go only a few years ago, when it had truly reached the end of its life.
Do you know how much I paid for that set? One single dollar.
That one dollar brought me so much comfort, joy, and longevity.
And that, Friends, is why I chose this prompt—because the coolest thing I’ve ever found isn’t about price or brand. It’s about the life that item lived with me. It’s about finding beauty in simplicity, value in thrift, and joy in sustainability.
I think back often to that one-dollar treasure when I consider how far I’ve come with my views on fashion and consumption. In recent years, I’ve reflected on these ideas in posts like Embracing Longevity: The Treasures of Daily Use, The Oldest Thing I’m Wearing Today: Cow Pants and Conscious Choices, and Fast Fashion Fails: When Cheap Clothes Cost the Earth (and Your Dignity).
These stories all weave together into a simple truth: when you get something you love, love it for years. Care for it, repair it, honor it. I no longer chase fast fashion; I prefer the secondhand, the well-made, the meaningful. And occasionally, I allow a new “spoilage”—a special piece that truly earns its place in my life.
Not everything valuable comes with a price tag.
So yes, that one-dollar satin combo will always be one of the coolest things I’ve ever found and kept. Not because of what it was, but because of what it taught me about gratitude, sustainability, and mindful living.
Here’s to finding joy in the simple things—and to making the most out of every dollar, every garment, and every moment.
