Retrograde: The Cosmic Pause

For a long time, I thought of retrogrades as nothing but bad news. Like most people, I bought into the narrative that “everything goes to hell” when a planet goes retrograde. But lately, I’ve come to see them differently. A retrograde isn’t about punishment or chaos — it’s more like the universe hitting a cosmic pause or reset button.

What Retrograde Really Means

From our view on Earth, a retrograde happens when a planet looks like it’s moving backward in its orbit. It’s an optical illusion — like when a faster car overtakes you on the highway. For a moment, it looks like the slower car is sliding backward, even though both cars are moving forward.

In astrology, that apparent reversal signals a shift. Instead of pushing energy outward, the planet’s influence turns inward. Think of it as the “Three R’s”:

  • Revisit
  • Reflect
  • Reorganize

Retrogrades invite us to slow down, look back, and tie up loose ends. They ask us to rethink what we’ve been rushing through — whether that’s projects, relationships, or even our own habits.

Retrogrades in Action: What Each Planet Means

Each planet’s retrograde plays out differently, depending on what it governs:

  • Mercury (Communication, Travel, Technology): The most famous retrograde. It’s the perfect time to double-check emails, back up files, and expect a few mix-ups. While it’s not ideal for launching brand new projects, it’s excellent for editing, revising, and rethinking. (For more on Mercury’s personality, you can read my post about Mercury here.)
  • Venus (Love, Money, Beauty): A reflective period for relationships and values. Old flames might reappear, and it’s usually wise to pause before making major financial or cosmetic changes.
  • Mars (Action, Drive, Energy): Motivation may dip, but this isn’t wasted time. It’s your chance to re-strategize, recharge, and align your actions with your long-term goals.

Other planets go retrograde too, but these three are the ones most of us feel in everyday life.

Retrogrades in My Chart

Retrogrades also show up at birth. I carry Mars retrograde in Gemini and Saturn retrograde in Leo. For me, that means:

  • Mars retrograde ? I tend to process energy and conflict inwardly before acting. It’s taught me to be more thoughtful about how I express drive and motivation.
  • Saturn retrograde ? I’ve had to develop my own systems for discipline and integrity. Authority wasn’t something handed to me neatly — it’s something I’ve learned to grow into.

Retrograde placements don’t mean weakness. They mean the planet’s lesson runs deeper.

Embracing Retrograde Energy

Yes, retrogrades can feel disruptive because they challenge our forward momentum. But they’re not curses — they’re opportunities. If you know they’re coming, you can work with them instead of against them. Retrogrades remind us that growth doesn’t always happen in straight lines. Sometimes it happens when we stop, rewind, and reflect.

Astrology isn’t all sunshine and butterflies, though. Retrogrades can bring frustrations, delays, and shadows we’d rather not face. As we go deeper into this series, I’ll also be exploring that side of astrology — what I like to think of as shadow astrology — because the dark and the light both have lessons for us.

Takeaway: Retrogrades are not here to punish you. They’re here to slow you down, turn your focus inward, and help you find clarity where you might have rushed before.
